Digital Painting
This is a digital painting of one of the hardest moments I carry with me. I painted myself as a child, standing in the hallway right before I walked into the room where my parents were waiting. It’s the space I was about to step into, the moment where everything changed.
I remember this exact feeling. The air felt heavy, like something was warning me before I even knew what I was walking toward. When I finally sat on the edge of the bed, I saw my dad’s face twist in a way I’d never seen. I thought I was in trouble at first but then he started crying, and that’s when they told me my cousin my best friend, had died.
I chose to paint the before instead of the after because that hallway is the last place where she still felt alive to me. In this digital piece, I tried to capture that moment: my innocence, the stillness right before I had my first heartbreak. When I look at it, I can step back into that hallway just for a moment, and I can pretend that she's still alive.
